The April 25th earthquake in Nepal has caused widespread destruction and disruption of the already difficult lives of the Nepalese. Immediate relief is needed, and a long, costly reconstruction process will then begin.
#1 – Providing immediate relief and reconstruction help to Gumpa Village, Sindapulchowk and Megre Village, Ramachamp
Ian and Sarita Wall of “Off the Wall Trekking”, one of our key Himalayan Partners (who have been with us from the very beginning), have close ties to these villages – Sarita grew up there, and the villages are still home to her extended family.
In 2012 and again in 2013 we delivered stoves to these communities, so they are part of our “family” as well.
We know the villages sustained extensive damage – virtually all the homes have been destroyed and many people were killed. Our concern now is for their protection from the elements and the amount of food that they have access to – both communities live from hand to mouth and as per the tradition all food materials would be stored in the houses, and presumably that is now either destroyed or contaminated.
Mike O’Shea, a charming Irishman (and accomplished mountain guide) and a group of his clients / pals trekked to Everest Base Camp in fall 2014 with Sarita, and they have a close bond with Sarita (and Ian, also).
Mike has started a fund for the necessary immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation of these villages, on our donation page

#2 – Providing immediate relief, in partnership with other organizations, to people who don’t have “the basics” food and water
Envirofit, our wonderful stove supply partner, has a remarkable, fast, efficient, low polluting Institutional Stove – the EFI 100L which has a 100 Liter pot and is ideal for cooking lentils (Dal) and rice (Bhat) making Dal Bhat; that staple, highly nutritious Nepali dish, as well as soups.
Envirofit has 40 of these stoves in India and we are making arrangements to bring them to Nepal as quickly as possible.
Our local team in Kathmandu, with the help and support of our colleague Dr. Fahim Rahim who is in Kathmandu now, is assessing this program and establishing relationships with NGO’s providing emergency relief in Nepal to help in providing badly needed food, very efficiently, to the many displaced people.
